Meghalaya is the land of Eri silk cocoons. The tradition of spinning and weaving is slowly fading in our region of Northeast India. We see an opportunity. That is why we want more makers to spin with this special 100% Eri silk roving.
Our Eri Silk Roving is made from the short fiber of the cocoon. This fiber has been processed in the mill where the cocoons are separated into A grade and B grade and waste cocoons. After the cocoons are degummed a machine will separate the long and short fiber for making various yarn types. This roving is made from the short fiber of the B Grade cocoon.
Since this is a shorter fiber you may experience breakage, that's why we recommend it to experienced spinners. This roving is excellent for blending with other fibers that are easier to spin, like wool. The B grade cocoon and cocoon waste make the fiber slubby, which lends to a rustic type yarn.
The natural color of this roving is the fiber that artisans are looking for. Experienced spinners love getting their hands on this ready to spin fiber. Not to mention the sustainable story behind this popular Eri silk.
I've never spun Eri Silk before, but I think it will be the only kind I ever do from here on out. I believe it will blend with other fibers very well. Looking forward to working with it!
